AWS Server Migration Service Launched
The AWS Server Migration Service lets you incrementally automate, schedule, and replicate Virtual Machines in the cloud, without the need for a long maintenance period.
You choose the servers for migration (either Windows or Linux), then select a replication frequency suited for your application’s usage pattern with the lowest possible bandwidth. AWS Server Migration Service will replicate the selected server’s volumes to the cloud with an Amazon Machine Image for each. A new AMI is created after every incremental sync.
Amazon Aurora Supports Calls to Stored Procedures and More
Amazon Aurora, AWS’s MySQL-compatible relational database, is introducing two new and highly useful features:
Invoke Lambda Stored Procedures
You may now write stored procedures that can call Lambda functions. This functionality makes Amazon Aurora doubly useful, as it lets you connect with other AWS services. You can use it to send an email using Amazon SES , or send publish metrics to Amazon CloudWatch, or update a table on DynamoDb, and so on.
Load Data from S3 to Amazon Aurora
To make it easier for S3 users to transfer data from their buckets directly to Aurora. There is no longer any need to go through EC2. You may do this via text form or XML form.
Amazon ElastiCache for Redis Updates
New and current users of this application will be happy to know that it now sports several useful features:
- Sharded Cluster Support and Improved Console –Formerly,Amazon ElastiCache for Redis only allowed up to a cluster of just one primary node and maximum of 5 read replicas. This translates to 237 Gb of storage.
Now, ElastiCache can carry up to 15 shards, providing a total of 3.5 Tb of storage. This provides a great improvement in read/write performance and availability as each shard may also have up to 5 read replicas. This means up to 20M reads sand 4.5M writes each second.
- Engine Update – ElastiCache has been updated to Regis engine 3.2. Some great features include:
- Enforced Write Consistency– A new WAIT command allows for It stops the caller until all standing write commands have been accepted at the primary node and the specified read replicas.
- SPOP with COUNT– You may now specify more than one element at a time to be removed and returned to a set.
- Bitfields– an efficient way to store small integers as bitmap and stored as a Redis string.
- Geospatial Data – The update now lets you store geospatial data. New commands allow you to add a geospatial item, measure the distance between to items, get a Geohash string, give the positions of items given a key or radius of a location or an item.
Amazon EMR — New Encryption Functions
Amazon EMR lets you analyze a vast amount of data using a cluster of virtual servers on the AWS cloud. Every day, this service processes large amounts of data daily, security is a paramount concern.
To enhance this feature, AWS is enhancing Amazon EMR for new kinds of encryption options—for temporary files and data in transit. You may now encrypt at-rest and in-transit data for Apache Spark, Apache Tez, and Hadoop MapReduce.
Specifically, you may now apply encrytion to these types of storage:
- Data stored in S3 through EMRFS.
- Data stored in the local file system of each node.
- Data stored on the cluster using HDFS.
